Senior Technology Safety FAQs
Scammers often use fear and confusion to trick people. These simple tips can help you stay safer when using your computer, phone, or email.
-
What should I do if a pop-up says my computer has a virus?
Do not click the pop-up, call the phone number, download anything, or let anyone control your computer. These warnings are often scams. Close the browser window or tab. If it will not close, restart the computer.
-
How can I tell if a security warning is fake?
Be careful if the message is loud, flashing, scary, or says you must act immediately. Fake warnings may say your computer is locked or that your personal information is in danger. Scammers can also copy familiar company logos.
-
What is a phishing email?
A phishing email is a fake message designed to trick you into clicking a harmful link, opening an attachment, sharing personal information, or sending money. It may look like it came from your bank, a store, a delivery company, or someone you know.
-
What are signs that an email may be a scam?
Watch for urgent demands, strange grammar, unexpected bills, prize offers, requests for passwords, or warnings that your account will be closed. Look closely at the sender’s email address. Scammers often use an address that looks similar to a real one.
-
Should I click a link in a suspicious email?
No. If you need to check your account, open your usual app or type the company’s website address yourself. Do not use the link in the email. If you are unsure, do nothing or delete the email.
-
What if I already clicked the link?
Do not panic. Close the website. If you entered a password, change it using the real company website or app. If you entered bank or credit card information, contact your bank using the phone number on your card or statement.
-
Should I let a stranger remotely control my computer?
No, not because of an unexpected call, email, or pop-up. Remote access can allow someone to see your files, passwords, and personal information. Only allow it when you contacted a trusted technician yourself.
-
What should I do if I am not sure?
Stop and take your time. Do not call the number in a pop-up or reply to a suspicious email. Ask someone you trust for help. Honest companies will not punish you for taking time to verify a message.
