tech tip - try turning it off

When it comes to technology, sometimes it feels like everything has a mind of its own. The TV won’t turn on, your Wi-Fi disappears, your phone freezes, or your printer refuses to cooperate right when you need it most.

And while we’re always happy to help at Help With My Tech, there’s one little piece of advice we give more often than you might expect:

“Have you tried turning it off, and then back on again?”

It may sound like a joke, but in all honesty—it’s not. In fact, this one simple step has fixed more tech issues than we can count.

Why Turning It Off Actually Works

Most modern devices are basically small computers. Even your smart TV, cable box, printer, and Wi-Fi router are constantly running little programs in the background. Over time, these programs can get stuck or confused, especially if something didn’t load properly or an update failed in the background.

Turning the power off (completely) gives the device a chance to reset. It clears out the memory, stops any background processes that might be frozen, and starts everything fresh.

When to Try It

Here are some examples of common problems that can often be fixed just by powering off and back on:

  • TV won’t turn on or gets stuck on one screen
  • Wi-Fi is acting up, not connecting or running super slow
  • Printer isn’t responding or says it’s offline
  • Smart home devices like Alexa or Ring stop responding
  • Phone or tablet apps keep crashing or freezing
  • Bluetooth won’t connect, even though it worked yesterday

How to Do It Right

Just “turning it off” isn’t always enough—sometimes it needs to be unplugged completely. Here are some quick tips:

• For TVs, routers, or printers: unplug the power cord from the wall, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in

• For phones or tablets: hold the power button until it turns off completely, then restart

• For computers: choose “Shut Down” instead of “Restart,” wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on

And If That Doesn’t Work…
