A Mac can be a dependable tool for email, photos, documents, video calls, and family communication. It can also feel unfamiliar when Apple changes the name of a menu or moves a setting.

If a path looks different, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and use the search field. Search for words such as Wi-Fi, backup, printer, notifications, or software update. What is the Apple menu?
The Apple menu is the small Apple symbol in the upper-left corner of the screen. It includes choices such as About This Mac, System Settings, Sleep, Restart, Shut Down, and Log Out. If the Mac behaves strangely, restarting is often a safe first step.
Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings or a reset option just because the Mac is slow. Those actions can remove your information. Ask for help before using a button that says erase, delete, reset, or remove.
What is Finder, and where are my files?
Finder is the Mac app used to browse files and folders. Its icon looks like a blue smiling face in the Dock. Your documents may be in Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, or iCloud Drive. Click a folder once to select it and double-click to open it.
If a file seems missing, open Finder and use its search field. Check the spelling, then look in Recents, Downloads, and iCloud Drive. A file may also be in the Trash. Do not empty the Trash until you are certain you no longer need its contents.
How do I make text easier to read?
Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, and search for display or text size. You can adjust the display resolution, text size, pointer size, contrast, and other choices depending on your Mac. Larger text often makes email and web pages more comfortable.
In a web browser, Command-plus usually makes a web page larger. Command-zero returns the page to its normal size. If the entire screen looks too small, use System Settings rather than changing each website separately.
How do I connect the Mac to Wi-Fi?
Click the Wi-Fi symbol in the menu bar, choose your home network, and enter the password. If you do not see the symbol, open System Settings and search for Wi-Fi. A Mac can say it is connected while the internet service is down, so test another device if websites will not load.
Restarting the Mac and the router can help. Avoid deleting or forgetting the network unless you know the password. If the Wi-Fi works in one room but not another, the problem may be signal strength rather than the Mac.
How do I install an app?
Use the App Store when the app is available there. Read the app name, developer, reviews, and permissions before installing it. If a website suddenly says your Mac has viruses and asks you to call a number, close the page. Do not install a remote-control app because of an unexpected pop-up.
Some trusted software comes directly from a company’s official website. Check the address carefully. A stranger should never need your Mac login password, Apple Account password, or a text-message verification code to “clean” the computer.
How do I take a screenshot?
Press Shift-Command-3 to capture the whole screen. Press Shift-Command-4 to select part of the screen. On some Macs, another shortcut opens a small screenshot toolbar. The image is commonly saved on the Desktop.
Screenshots are a useful way to show a helper what you see. Before sending one, look for passwords, account numbers, private messages, health information, or verification codes.
How do I copy and paste?
Select text or a file, then press Command-C to copy it. Click where you want it and press Command-V to paste. Command-X cuts selected text or files, but be careful with files so you do not move them accidentally.
If a menu or window seems stuck, press the Escape key once. If one app will not respond, press Option-Command-Escape to open the Force Quit window. Force quitting can lose unsaved work, so use it only when the app is truly frozen.
How do I update the Mac?
Open System Settings and search for software update. Install updates when you have time for the Mac to restart. Keep the Mac connected to power during a laptop update. Updates may add security fixes and improve reliability, but the appearance of System Settings can change afterward.
If an update will not install, check storage, internet, and power. A nearly full Mac may need space cleared. Do not delete a folder just because its name is unfamiliar. Documents, photos, and downloads should be reviewed before removal.
How do I back up a Mac?
Apple’s built-in Time Machine can back up a Mac to a compatible external drive. Search System Settings for Time Machine and follow the instructions to choose a backup disk. A backup gives you another way to recover files if the Mac is lost, damaged, or replaced.
iCloud can sync items such as photos, notes, contacts, calendars, and iCloud Drive files. Syncing is helpful, but it is not the same as having a separate backup of every file. Important family photos and documents should have a second copy when possible.
What is iCloud on a Mac?
iCloud connects Apple devices through your Apple Account. Open System Settings, click your name, and search for iCloud to review what is syncing. Photos, Notes, Contacts, Calendars, passwords, and iCloud Drive may appear on more than one device.
Remember that syncing can copy changes in both directions. If you delete an iCloud Drive file or photo on one device, the change may appear on another device. Check Recently Deleted before assuming something is gone forever.
Why is my printer, camera, or microphone not working?
First, check that the device is powered on and connected. Search System Settings for printers, camera, microphone, or privacy. An app may need permission to use the camera or microphone. Review the app name before allowing access.
For a video call, check the selected microphone, camera, and speaker inside the call app. If sound is going to headphones, disconnect Bluetooth temporarily or choose the Mac’s built-in speakers.
How do I make the Mac safer?
Use a strong Mac login password and lock the screen when you step away. Turn on automatic updates when that choice is available. Be cautious with unexpected email attachments, urgent payment demands, and remote-access requests.
Never share your Mac password, Apple Account password, or a verification code with an unexpected caller. A real company will not need you to read a code aloud so it can “protect” your account. If you are unsure, stop and contact the company using a phone number from its official website or your statement.
How do I restart a Mac?
Open the Apple menu and choose Restart. Give the Mac time to close apps and start again. If it is frozen, hold the power button until it turns off, wait a moment, and turn it back on. Unsaved work may be lost when you force the Mac to shut down.
When should I ask for help?
Ask for help before erasing a Mac, deleting unfamiliar folders, responding to a scary pop-up, or entering a password on a page you did not expect. Also ask when files are missing, a new Mac needs setup, or you want a backup plan you can trust.

How do I use the keyboard and trackpad?
Click once to select something and double-click to open it. Scroll with two fingers on a trackpad or use the mouse wheel. If the pointer is hard to see, search System Settings for pointer and make it larger. If the trackpad seems too sensitive, search for trackpad and adjust the speed.
When you are typing, Command-plus and Command-minus may change the size of text in many apps. The Space bar can scroll a web page, and the Return key usually confirms a choice. You do not need to memorize shortcuts. Menus at the top of the screen show available commands.
Why does Safari show a strange message?
A website may display a fake warning, a prize notice, or a request to call technical support. Close the tab without calling. If the tab will not close, quit Safari from the Safari menu or restart the Mac. Clear browsing data only when you understand what will be removed. Your bookmarks and saved passwords may be affected by some choices, so ask before resetting them.
