You can hear a video clearly but struggle to understand your daughter on the phone. Or you turn down a loud video and later miss a call. These frustrations are common because a phone handles several kinds of sound. A careful setup can make calls more comfortable and easier to notice.

How do I turn up the voice during a phone call?

Call someone you trust and have them speak normally. While the call is connected, press the volume-up button on the side. On an iPhone, those buttons adjust the active call’s sound. Make small changes until the voice is comfortable.

Move the top receiver near your ear and check your grip. A case, screen protector, or finger can partly cover the opening. If one person is hard to hear but others are clear, the problem may be their microphone or connection rather than your volume.

Why is the ringtone still quiet after I turn up the call?

The ringtone has its own setting. On iPhone, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics and adjust Ringtone and Alerts. Consider turning off Change with Buttons so casual button presses do not change that slider.

Play a ringtone sample and choose a sound you notice easily. A steady, distinct tone may be easier to recognize than a soft tune. Test it from the place you usually keep your phone, not just while holding it close.

Silent mode and Focus can still quiet calls even with a high ringer setting. For a full checklist, see our guide to missing important calls.

Can speakerphone make calls easier to understand?

Often, yes. During an iPhone call, tap Audio and select Speaker, or tap the speaker control shown on your version. Put the phone on a stable surface nearby. Background television and fans can make speech harder to follow, so quiet the room first.

Ask the caller to speak clearly and pause between ideas. Louder is not always clearer. Repeating a key date or phone number can help more than raising the sound to an uncomfortable level.

Why is my call playing through a car or Bluetooth device?

Your phone may still be connected to earbuds, a speaker, a car, or hearing devices. Look at the Audio choices during the call and select the destination you want. Do not assume the call is silent before checking where its sound is going.

For a useful test, turn off an unused accessory or disconnect it in Bluetooth settings, then call again. Do not remove a hearing-device connection unless you understand how to reconnect it. Keep a short note of the usual audio destination.

What hearing features might help me?

iPhone accessibility settings include options for supported hearing devices and headphone audio. Features depend on the phone, software, and accessory. A setting designed for compatible headphones will not necessarily boost the ordinary phone receiver.

If you use hearing aids, check their exact model’s phone compatibility with your hearing-care professional or manufacturer. Ask how calls switch between the aids and the speaker. Practice that switch before an important call.

Set the voice for comfort. Set the ringer so you notice it.

A phone setting cannot explain every hearing difficulty. If speech remains hard to understand across different phones and quiet rooms, discuss that with a hearing-care professional.

When should I ask for technical help?

If sound is crackly or missing, compare the receiver and speakerphone on a normal call. Check for debris or a covering over the sound openings. Apple recommends a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush when cleaning is necessary. Avoid sharp tools, liquids, or pushing dirt into the opening.

Try another location to check reception. If the speaker works but the receiver does not, or all sound remains distorted, arrange a hardware check. Tell the support person whether the problem affects every caller and every audio destination.

Where can I check the official instructions?
